pH balance is a fundamental aspect of human physiology that rarely enters everyday health conversations — yet maintaining the blood's pH within an extremely narrow range is one of the body's most critical homeostatic priorities. The acids and bases produced by normal metabolism are potentially lethal if not continuously neutralized, and the multiple regulatory systems that keep blood pH between 7.35 and 7.45 represent some of the most elegant examples of physiological coordination in biology.

THE BASICS OF pH

pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration in a solution, expressed on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 14. Pure water at 25°C has a pH of 7.0 (neutral). Solutions with pH below 7 are acidic (higher H+ concentration); solutions above 7 are basic/alkaline (lower H+ concentration).

Because the scale is logarithmic, each unit change in pH represents a 10-fold change in H+ concentration. The difference between blood pH of 7.35 and 7.45 — apparently a tiny range — actually represents nearly a 30% difference in H+ concentration.
